Halloween is always a big holiday around here. It’s a chance to dress up in scary costumes and eat lots of candy.
But this is a time of year when you should always be careful. Especially if you’re having company over to your home for any Halloween festivities. Injuries can happen. And the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) keeps track of some of those numbers.
Halloween Injuries
During the last three years, the CPSC estimates that there have been an 3,600 Halloween-related injuries annually. That figure includes:
- 48% related to pumpkin carving
- 27% due to falls from putting up decorations, tripping on costumes, or walking while trick or treating
- 25% of injuries due to lacerations, ingestions and other injuries with costumes, pumpkins, or decorations, and allergic reactions or rashes
According to the CPSC, 56% of those injuries that occur annually happened to adults aged 18 or older, while 44 percent happen to those under the age of 18. About six percent of those injuries, according to the CPSC, happen to children two years old or younger.
Injuries can happen at any time. But there’s a risk to them happening during the Halloween season. You need to take all the precautions possible.
Keeping Safe This Halloween Season
Keeping your home safe should always be important, but it’s especially the case during the Halloween season. That’s why you should always follow these tidbits:
- Letting adults handle the pumpkin carving
- Using battery-operated lights and glow sticks
- Wearing a costume that fits; avoid wearing long or baggy costumes that prevent trips and falls
- Follow CDC and local jurisdiction regarding COVID-19 protocols
Hopefully you’re doing a lot to protect your home anyway. These are just some simple steps. But there’s more you can do.
For example, if you have homeowner’s insurance then you should try and get umbrella insurance. Here’s what it can do for you.
Getting an Umbrella Insurance Policy this year
If you have a home or auto insurance policy, you might feel like that’s more than enough to keep you protected. However, even those policies have their limits in terms of what they payout in the instance of an accident. Most home and auto insurance policies might pay out $100k at most.
A personal umbrella insurance policy can give you an extra layer of coverage that you don’t receive from your home or auto policy. Because your home and auto policies have limits, getting an umbrella policy can be helpful for you. Think of it as a perfect complement to your current home or auto policy.
Keeping your home safe is important. And umbrella insurance is a good starting point to keeping your home safe.
If your home or auto insurance policy comes with $250-500,000 in liability coverage, then you’re eligible to get an umbrella policy. If you get an umbrella insurance policy, you’ll want to get one at the start of $1 million.
It’s important to note that your umbrella insurance coverage won’t kick in until you max out your normal insurance, however. The nice thing about getting an umbrella insurance policy is how inexpensive it is to get. And Chastain Otis can help you find the right umbrella insurance coverage for you.
